The Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) is working for more than 40 years on the following research areas: Power Electronics, Electronic Devices, Electrical Drives and Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems. Since 1996 the institute is headed by Prof. Dr. ir. Dr. h. c. Rik W. De Doncker, who has additionally been appointed director of the E.ON Energy Research Center in 2006.
Besides public founded research projects, one focus of ISEA are research and development activities in close co-operation with national and international companies within the already mentioned application areas. In addition ISEA offers engineering services (e.g. measurement/characterization, engineering opinion and consulting) for companies in nearly all fields of activity.
MEET (Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology) is the battery research center at Münster University. It comprises an international team of around 140 scientists working on the research and development of innovative electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy density, longer durability and maximum safety. The aim is to improve batteries for use in electric cars and stationary energy storage systems. MEET brings together basic scientific research and industrial applications at one location. To this purpose, it works together closely with both other scientific institutions and partners from industry. The laboratory facilities include the modules functional material synthesis, electrode and cell production, cell testing and electrical measurement technology.
PEC delivers the building blocks for the development and manufacturing of large format cells, modules and battery packs for automotive, aerospace and defense applications. PEC’s offerings include R&D test equipment and automated cell finishing lines automating all process steps after the electrolyte filling (soaking, formation, grading, degassing, ageing, stand loss, sorting…).

M.Braun Inertgas-Systeme GmbH is the world lead in manufacturing custom made inert gas enclosures. Especially for the lithium ion battery industry we offer enclosures for the diagnostic and the production of lithium ion cells in an inert gas atmosphere. These enclosures offer a more flexible working environment compared to dry rooms. Additionally they have lower investment cods, offer lower cost of ownership and are safer to operate.
Many of the manufacturers and users of lithium ion cells use glove boxes for research, production and quality control. For research in new technologies glove boxes offer the possibility to investigate new materials like lithium metal in an oxygen, moisture and nitrogen free environment. In production our enclosures, so called mini-environments, are used for electrolyte dosing, as in this process moisture will affect directly the quality of the battery cell. Additionally the use of mini-environments guarantees safety of the operators regarding solvent vapors and minimize the danger of combustion.

In particular, we test your cells and batteries (electrical, thermal and mechanical), work out algorithms for lead-acid and Li-Ion batteries and develop and manufacture Li-Ion battery prototypes as well as in small series production. Proper preparation of the active material is the basis for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. The particles must have the right size and must also be properly wetted to ensure optimal further processing of the material. Bühler offers decades of experience in the wet grinding and dispersing technology. The reliable and proven equipment is suitable for the preparation of the active material. With extensive knowledge in the processing of nanoparticles Bühler supports the manufacturing process of the active material .
For the expected growth created by the electric mobility and stationary applications, conventional batch and semi-continuous mixing approaches will no longer fulfill the requirements of electrode slurry processing. Therefore, Bühler has developed a novel process for fully continuous electrode slurry production. The technology is based on twin screw mixing which combines raw material handling (simultaneous constant dosing of all liquid and solid components of the recipe), pre-mixing, kneading, fine dispersing and degassing in a single continuous device.
The new process provides a very high productivity (2’400 l/h) while simultaneously, the investment (up to 3 times less compared to batch mixing processes) and operating cost (labor, energy consumption of mixing line and dry room) are significantly reduced.

The Saueressig GmbH + Co. KG has brought a new technology for the compression of dry powder materials and lithium ion battery electrodes on to the market. This technique increases the efficiency of batteries and capacitors production because active materials can be prepared without wet coating and subsequent drying through the processing of so-called dry films. In addition, solvent-based additives are not necessary for this production process. Innovative approaches are involved since this process depends on special conditions: highest line pressures, lowest web tension and smallest thickness tolerances in the final product. With their patented gap control, Saueressig units achieve product thickness tolerances in the micrometer range. The electrode tapes and dry films, which are compressed at this time, are essential for the design and performance of lithium ion batteries and capacitors.

Kratzer Automation AG plan and built tailor-made Battery-Test-Solutions for investigation of Energy-Storage-Systems. From upgrading and modernization of existing solutions up to complete test-centers turnkey. To ensure a high level of modularity in testing of Batterycells, -modules and –packs we developed our high precise ‘High-End DC-Sources’ of our VES series. To simulate environmental conditions we built our battery test systems also with integrated high-dynamic Climate-Chambers suitable for tests from Batterycells up to Batterypacks. Applicable for example to execute temperature-gradients within a framework of shock-tests.

The Battery Labfactory Braunschweig (BLB) of the TU Braunschweig focuses on the development of new manufacturing processes for modern lithium-ion battery cells as well as new battery generations. The BLB represents the entire, flexible process chain on modern manufacturing facilities for lithium-ion battery cells. Since 2008, in addition to the battery cell production, the BLB investigates the entire life cycle of a battery:
– material production and –conditioning
– electrode-, cell-, module- and system development and production
– integration and use in vehicles
– recycling of the battery systems and
– the return of the recycled materials into the material cycle
ElectroMobility NRW is the central point of contact for electric mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its mission is to support the development of electric mobility in all areas. This is done by organizing information events, workshops and citizen days, trade shows, presentations and the publication of information. The provision of information to citizens, supporting municipalities considering electric mobility and the networking with all relevant actors in Research & Development are also tasks of ElectroMobility NRW.
Moreover, the project databases as well as the competence map – both initiates by the competence centres – provide an overview of the subsidized state and federal projects along with a fast and targeted search function for specialists and potential project partners of electric mobility in NRW. In addition, we will inform you about possible funding opportunities from the EU, the German federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
